The Victorian fashion era began with Queen Victoria’s reign in 1837 and ended in 1901, upon her death. It marked a pivotal time in Britain’s history and around the world. In fashion, the Victorian era is an elaborate display of class, wealth, beauty, and purpose for women and men. The layers of dress and suiting required for poor and rich alike were impractical, sometimes even uncomfortable, but always beautifully fashionable. Victorian fashion began with large dresses, poke bonnets, and modest coverings for the ladies, all while men displayed color, pattern, and rigidity in their attire. By the end of the era, a simpler silhouette was making waves, leading the next Edwardian generation to new freedoms in life and fashion.

Get Know The Victorian Era

During the Victorian era, women’s fashion underwent significant changes. Queen Victoria’s reign from the mid-19th century to the early 20th century was a time of strict social norms and conservative values, which were reflected in women’s clothing.

In the earlier years of the Victorian era, women’s clothing was relatively plain and conservative, with long dresses and a loose fitting blouses made of cotton or silk. Skirts were usually floor-length and had a fullness to them, while bodices were often boned and structured to create a shape. Collars and cuffs were often starched and decorated with lace or ribbon.

Later in the Victorian era, fashion became more elaborate, with intricate details and embroidery. Skirt widths increased, and petticoats became an essential layer to create fullness and volume. Women often wore multiple petticoats, each of a different size and shape, to achieve the desired look. Petticoats were usually white or ivory and could be made of cotton, silk, or even steel to provide structure and support.

Footwear also changed during the Victorian era, with women wearing closed-toe shoes called “pumps” or “slippers” made of leather or velvet. Heels were often low, and shoes were decorated with bows or lace.

Overall, Victorian women’s fashion was conservative and reflect the era’s values of modesty and decorum. Fashion trends changed over time, but women’s clothing remained relatively structured and formal throughout the Victorian era.

Development of Victorian Fashion

Develop of Victorian Fashions from 1800s-1880s

In 1830s to 1900s, Victorian costumes throughout the Victorian era. The period saw many changes in fashion .

In the 1840s and 1850s, women’s gowns had wide puffed sleeves. Dresses were simple and pale, and incorporated realistic flower trimming. Petticoats, corsets, and chemises were worn under gowns. By the 1850s the number of petticoats was reduced to be superseded by the crinoline, and the size of skirts expanded. Day dresses had a solid bodice and evening gowns had a very low neckline and were worn off the shoulder with shawls.

In the 1860s, the skirts became flatter at the front and projected out more behind the woman. Day dresses had wide pagoda sleeves and high necklines with lace or tatted collars. Evening dresses had low necklines and short sleeves, and were worn with short gloves, fingerless lace or crocheted mitts.

In the 1870s, un-corseted tea gowns were introduced for informal entertaining at home and steadily grew in popularity. Bustles were used to replace the crinoline to hold the skirts up behind the woman, even for “seaside dresses”. The fad of hoop skirts had faded and women strived for a slimmer style. The dresses were extremely tight around the corseted torso and the waist and upper legs; Punch ran many cartoons showing women who could neither sit nor climb stairs in their tight dresses. The crinoline was replaced by the bustle in the rear. Small hats were perched towards the front of the head, over the forehead. To complement the small hat, women wore their hair in elaborate curls. Some women wore hairpieces called “scalpettes” and “frizzettes” to add to the volume of their hair.

In the 1880s, riding habits had a matching jacket and skirt (without a bustle), a high-collared shirt or chemisette, and a top hat with a veil. Hunting costumes had draped ankle-length skirts worn with boots or gaiters. Clothing worn when out walking had a long jacket and skirt, worn with the bustle, and a small hat or bonnet. Travelers wore long coats like dusters.

In the 1890s, Women’s wear in the last decade of the Victorian era was characterised by high collars, held in place by collar stays, and stiff steel boning in long line bodices. By this time, there were neither crinolines nor bustles. Women opted for the tiny wasp waist instead.

In 2024 , We have designed and produced a lots of Floral Jacquard Renaissance Medieval Victorian Dresses and It’s a stunning garment that exudes a sense of old-world elegance and romance. Cut in a Renaissance-inspired style, these dresses features a fitted bodice with a plunging neckline and a form-fitting waist. The skirt, which falls to the ground, is full and flows gracefully with every movement.

The material of the dress is floral jacquard, a pattern that is both visually arresting and rich in texture. The jacquard pattern is created using a special loom that allows for intricate designs to be woven into the fabric, resulting in a luxurious and unique texture. The floral pattern is reminiscent of the romanticism of the Medieval and Victorian eras, with its elaborate designs and vibrant colors.

The Renaissance influence is evident in the bodice’s fitted design, which accentuates the curves of the female form. The plunging neckline is reminiscent of the necklines of dresses worn during the Renaissance period, which often exposed the décolletage and shoulders.

The waist of the dress is cinched with a thin belt, emphasizing its hourglass shape and creating a flattering silhouette. The full skirt falls from the waist, billowing outwards to create a graceful silhouette that recalls the fashions of the Medieval and Victorian eras.

The Floral Jacquard Renaissance Medieval Victorian Dress is the perfect choice for those seeking to embody the elegance and romance of the past while making a statement about their unique taste in fashion. Whether worn to a formal event or a Renaissance fair, this dress will turn heads and capture attention.

Dressing in Victorian style can be a fun and unique way to express your creativity and appreciation for history. Here are some tips on how to dress in Victorian style:

Research Victorian fashion: Before you start shopping, take some time to research Victorian Dresses. Look at images of Victorian fashions, including men’s and women’s clothing, to get an idea of the styles and silhouettes that were popular during this era. This will help you understand what elements to look for when shopping.

Find the right materials: When shopping for Victorian-style clothing, pay attention to the materials used. Look for high-quality materials like cotton, silk, or velvet. Velvet was particularly popular during the Victorian era and can add a luxurious touch to your outfit.

Look for classic Victorian patterns: Patterns and prints were very important during the Victorian era. Look for patterns like florals, paisleys, and geometrics. These patterns were very popular during this era and can add a touch of authenticity to your outfit.

Women’s fashion: Women during the Victorian era wore dresses, skirts, and corsets. Look for dresses with Empire waistlines, which were very popular during this era. You can also add a corset to this style. Ensure that the corset is properly fitted and doesn’t cause any discomfort.

Men’s fashion: Men during the Victorian era wore suits, waistcoats, and ties. Look for suits with classic cuts and high-quality materials. Add a waistcoat and bow tie to complete the look.

Accessories: Accessories are an important part of Victorian style. Women can add bonnets, caps, fichus, or lace collars to complete their look. Men can add bowlers, top hats, or monocles to complete their outfit.

Remember to have fun with it and don’t feel too pressure to perfectly replicate the Victorian era. Your outfits don’t have to be historically accurate as long as you’re happy with the way they look and feel comfortable wearing them.

Victorian Era Fashion

Victorian Era Women’s Fashion Dresses Gowns

During the initial years of the Victorian rule, namely the 1840 and 1850 period, the gowns worn by women were narrow and had sloping shoulders. They also had low but pointed waists and bell-shaped skirts. Women wore corsets, which reached up to the knees and layers of petticoats under their gowns. Later on, pantalettes and crinoline were used instead of petticoats and chemise.

1840s/1850s victorian fashion

The reason for this change was that the size of the skirts had expanded and so pantalettes was more suited to this new change. The dresses worn by women during the day had a solid bodice. For the evening occasions, the Victorian women had some liberty as they could bear the shoulders and upper part of the chest. This apparel was completed by a shawl and opera-length gloves.

This was the case of upper and middle-class women. Shawls also formed a part of the Victorian costume. By 1860, the skirts were flat at the front. The day dresses had pagoda sleeves and a high neckline. These necklines either had lace or tatted collar on them. However, for the evening wear, the gowns had a low neckline and short sleeves along with appropriate gloves.

Somewhere in 1870, tea-gowns were introduced for casual get-togethers at home. By 1867 Crinoline was replaced by Bustles to hold the skirts up. The invention of the sewing machine in the late 18th century enabled women to wear sewn clothes. The use of machine brought about a lot of change in the clothing fashion.

1840s ball gowns

Victorian era women’s wear timeline

1830s dress style
During the early years of Queen Victoria’s reign in 1837, the ideal shape of the Victorian woman was a long slim torso emphasised by wide hips.
To get a low and slim waist, tightly laced corsets were used that extended over the abdomen and down towards the hips. The corset was commonly worn over a chemise. The tight-fitting bodice with a low waistline was over the corset. Read more about history of Corsets and Corset Punishments.. Read more about history of Corsets and Corset Punishments.. A long skirt accompanied the bodice, with layers of horsehair petticoats worn underneath to create fullness; emphasising the small waist. The narrow waist was contrasted by low and straight necklines.
Women’s dresses had larger sleeves than were worn in any period before or since and were accompanied by elaborate hairstyles and large hats.

1830s victorian fashion

1840s dress style
Key features were low neckline, collapsed sleeves, elongated V-shaped bodices, and fuller skirts.
Skirts lengthened with increased width with the arrival of the horsehair crinoline in 1847; which became a status symbol of wealth.
More layers of flounces and petticoats emphasised the fullness of the wide skirts. Skirts were attached to bodices with very tight organ pleats secured at each fold. This served a decorative purpose for a relatively plain skirt. The 1830s was flamboyant whereas 1840s style was perceived as conservative and “Gothic” compared to the 1830s.

1840s victorian fashion

1850s dress style
Day dress necklines dropped even lower into a V-shape. So the bust area was covered with a chemisette.
Evening dress featured a Bertha, exposing the shoulder area instead. Bodices extended over the hips, sleeves opened further and increased in fullness. The volume and width of the skirt increased even further, especially during 1853 with the addition of rows of flounces. The invention of synthetic dyes introduced new colours to garments and women tried gaudy and bright colours.

1850s victorian fashion

1860s dress style
Size of crinolines decreased in size at the top, but retained their amplitude at the bottom.
Its shape became flatter in the front and more voluminous behind.
Bodices ended at the natural waistline, had wide pagoda sleeves, high necklines and collars for day dresses and low necklines for evening dresses.

1860s victorian fashion

1870s dress style
Broad skirts trend slowly vanished in the and women prefered an even slimmer silhouette. Bodices had natural waistline, necklines varied, and sleeves began under the shoulder line.

1870s victorian fashion

1880s dress style
The bustle re-appeared in 1883, and featured a further exaggerated horizontal protrusion at the back. Drapery moved towards the sides or front panel of the skirt and at the back was lifted up into poufs. Bodices were shortened and ended above the hips.

1880s victorian fashion gown dress

1890s dress style
By 1890, the crinoline and bustle were completely abandoned. Skirts naturally flared away from the tiny waist and evolved into a bell shape. High necklines, sleeves of bodices peaked at the shoulders, which increased in size during 1894.

After the mid-19th century

three important events impacted women’s fashion.

1. The invention of the sewing machine – speed and quality of sewing improved dramatically.

2. The invention of synthetic dyes – it created intense fabric colours

3. Bustles – the fashionable shape of crinolines changed with a flat front, in time for the arrival of the bustle.

By 1883 the bustles became really popular. It was an uncomfortable garment which made sitting in the chair difficult.

Dresses in this period were strictly regulated, and the incorrect dress would mean getting censured from the influential ladies of high fashion.

To summarize Victorian fashion, nearly 70 years of clothing styles, in one article would be a daunting task (not to mention very long read). Instead, the following links will guide you to many articles about specific years, general styles, or accessories that make up Victorian fashion. The purpose is not only to educate about (mostly upper class) Victorian fashions, but to give you practical tips, links, and purchasing options for creating your own Victorian costume.

My first foray into the world of historical costuming began with the Victorian era at a ball where ladies danced in the most elegant hooped dresses I have ever seen. From that moment on, I was hooked. My quest to make my own Victorian gown for the next ball began with a pattern, some fabric, and not nearly enough research since I ended up creating an 18th century (1780s) dress! My research and writing here at Salelolita.com is my attempt to curb those beginner pitfalls while being mindful of budget, time, and ability constraints.

New articles are always in progress and questions are welcomed. On to the Victorian fashion !
